A 5 WEEK DEEP DIVE INTO CHARACTER EMBODIMENT AND THE ART OF PLAY
MARCH 13 - APRIL 18
This 5 week online course will inspire and challenge you to experience yourself in ways you never have before.
It will expand your understanding of human nature, psychology and behavior.
It will leave you with more tools and awareness for interacting with your life, and all the characters in it.
Acting has always been such a healing art for me.
It has allowed me the space to come into intimate contact with the many parts of who I am, and to grow a relationship with them—with all of me.
It has allowed me the space to take ferocious risks without real world consequences, but to still feel the emotional impact, and learn from it.
It has allowed me the space to investigate and understand forms of life very different from my own, and to discover the infinite threads of human connection and empathy.
It has allowed me the space to become another, and therefore, to really know what it means to be myself.
As Shakespeare so aptly put it, theatre can "hold the mirror up to nature," and often reveal truths we didn’t know were there.
What we do
Each actor will be investigating a piece of theatrical text that will be assigned to them, and will learn how to authentically embody the character that arises from that text. This will involve READING THE SCRIPT to feel the full impact of the richness of the character's story, USING IMAGINATION to fill in any questions that the script leaves no answers to, GETTING EXPERIMENTAL AND CREATIVE to discover how the character wants to be expressed through the body and voice, and DEVELOPING A RELATIONSHIP OF TRUST AND AUTHENTICITY with the other actor in the scene (and the group as a whole) to invite the lessons and expansion that connection creates.
As with all my acting classes, there will be emphasis on authenticity, connection, movement & storytelling through the body, vulnerability, communication, and trusting your unique creative instrument.
Each week of the course will build upon what is learned the previous week, with the experience culminating in a presentation of an embodied monologue (you will learn what this is during the course), and the scene that you will have explored and developed throughout the 5 weeks.
